CHARLES “CHARLIE” BECHERER

Devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away on Friday, December 9, 2016.

Charlie was born on October 31, 1934, to Oswald and Bertha Becherer in Granite City, Illinois. He was a Communication Engineer in the Marine Corps in Korea, finishing his enlistment as a Staff Sergeant. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1961, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering. He worked in New Mexico and Nevada, and then in the computer industry in California. Charlie and his wife, Mary, retired to Myrtle Creek, Oregon, in 1981, and later moved to the Roseburg area. After retiring he spent time with family and friends, and volunteered at South Umpqua High School, the Roseburg Public Library, and provided hospice care at the Veteran’s Hospital in Roseburg. He was a member of the Myrtle Creek Elks Lodge, Co-Chair of the South Umpqua Rodeo, and was honored to be named First Citizen of Myrtle Creek in 1994.

Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Mary (Hettinger); his children, Laura Eros (Andrew), Theresa Mayne (Craig), Patricia “Trish” McCracken (Steve), Charles “Chuck” Becherer, Jr., (Lisa), and William “Bill” Becherer (Kristana); twelve grandchildren; his sister, Louise McCann; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Suliteanu (Ron); his granddaughter, Stephanie Eros; and five of his siblings.

Charlie never stopped learning. He was an avid reader and he loved a good debate. He was known for his honesty, humility and strong work ethic. He was a good man who could be counted on for the simple truth. He was a man of few words, and when he spoke you listened because it was meaningful. He believed in giving to others because he had been given much. Rest now, Charlie.
