Howard Irvin Hatcher, age 88 of Oakland, Oregon passed away Sunday, June 17, 2018
Howard Irvin Hatcher died on Father’s Day, June 17, 2018, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Howard was born in Marshfield, OR, to Clarence and Sylvia (Neely) Hatcher. The third of three children, he grew up in Coos and Douglas Counties in Oregon.
After graduating from Elkton High School in 1948, he attended one semester of college at Cascade Christian College in Portland, OR. He was later drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Japan. After being honorably discharged in 1954, he returned to Douglas County to marry his longtime sweetheart Alna Surgeon in February of that year. During their first years together, he drove logging truck. Then in 1958, he was hired by Tektronix in Beaverton, OR, and moved his wife and their two sons to the Portland area, where they had one more son and finally a daughter. After thirty-five years at Tektronix and almost two years at Enoch Manufacturing in Clackamas, OR, he and Alna returned to the part of Oregon that they really loved – the Kellogg area – for their retirement.
He and Alna attended many Conservative Baptist churches, helped start Boones Ferry Baptist Church in Tualatin, OR, and supported many missionaries.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lucille Muirhead; his daughter-in-law, Cinda Hatcher; and his nephew, Monty Muirhead. Howard is survived by his wife of over 64 years, Alna; his sons, Dan Hatcher (Connie), Dave Hatcher (Laura), and Dana Hatcher; his daughter, Darcy Pedro (Mike); 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; his sister, Doris Holcomb (Eugene); and many nephews and nieces and all their children and grandchildren.
Although Howard’s wife, children, grandchildren, and remaining family are grieving for their loss; they are overjoyed that he is now with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
A memorial service will be held at the Elkton Bible Baptist Church in Elkton, OR, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2018.
