Margaret Mae Arms 1926~2018

Margaret Mae Arms, a resident of Winston, Oregon, passed away on June 21, 2018, at the age of 92 years. Margaret was born in DeQueen, Arkansas, on March 25, 1926, to Benjamin Stuart Hopson and Sarah Elsie Hoard- Hopson.

Margaret lived on the family farm until her high school years where she then moved to town to live with her sister, Angeline and family. Margaret was able to finish high school and participate in sports activities. She loved playing basketball and was named the most athletic female student in her senior year.

Margaret was a certified nurse’s aide for many years. She retired from her last place of employment, The Douglas County Nursing Home, after 15 years of service.

Margaret had many hobbies and loved to volunteer her time in the community of Winston. She was a Cub Scout Den Leader for several years and volunteered many summers to help clean and landscape the county parks. Most of all Margaret loved growing extra vegetables in her garden and feeding them to the elephants at the Wildlife Safari. Margaret also loved gardening (flowers and veggies), canning, rock hunting, bird watching, history reading, and good old country dancing. Margaret enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents Benjamin and Sarah Hopson; sisters, Angeline, Lucille, Naomi and Mary Ann; brother, Benny; daughter, Garle Ann Smith; grandson, Nicholas Geyer; others, Garland Smith and Art Arms; and life partner, Wayne Ballard.

Margaret will dearly be missed by her children, Sarah Smith- Mathews (husband Rick Mathews), Mark Smith, Arlene Arms- Young (husband Alan Young), Marlene Arms- Halstead , Bob Arms ; stepchildren, Rich Ballard, Kenny Ballard, Tamara Ballard, Guy Ballard; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held September 15, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at Civil Bend Cemetery, Winston, Oregon.

A potluck celebration of life will follow immediately after. Location: TBA at graveside service.
